- AYST 2024 FUNDING WINNERS ANNOUNCED
On Saturday 10th February 2024 at MOTH Club, Are You Seeing This announced the inaugural recipients of their annual funding. This year's winners are: KATIE KING DAISY MOORE From a large number of applications, both recipients received £450 each towards their new projects - both in development currently. In line with AYST's values the process was kept as open and accessible for applicants as possible, resulting in an interesting and diverse set of submissions. The winners were announced at the February screening and we will be keeping you up to date on their progress throughout the year. This year we picked projects that we felt were for emerging filmmakers at significant points in their career, where this next project has the potential to be an important step for them. Both Katie and Daisy's innovative and exciting style of filmmaking stood out to the AYST team - as well as their efforts to fund their work so far, with realistic budgets and clear outlines on the next steps.
- SAFE/UNSAFE: RE-PRESENTING ASSAULT
CW: the films written about below focus on r@pe and PTSD To our absolute bewilderment, we continued our streak of bringing our lovely filmmakers and audience down on one of the hottest days of the year to MOTH Club (Hackney) to watch, discuss, and mingle on Sunday 10th September. The films presented this time were: 'You Look Fine' dir. Katie Byford 'A Sound That Follows A Silence' dir. Hannah Tasker For the theme this September, we decided to go ahead with two films rather than our usual three - to give time and space to really explore the themes covered. Together we looked at how we can re-present traumatic, unsafe events (in this case r@pe) from a safe distance. Katie's film started the afternoon off, tackling the systemically common experiences of loneliness and shutting out when reporting assault to a medical professional. Using flashbacks, an intricate melding of sounds and movements, and striking symbols throughout, we talked in depth about the meanings and making of the film. After some audience questions, we moved on to our second film of the day - and were lucky to be joined by the filmmakers mother who stars in the documentary film with her. Getting the chacne to deal with similar thematic points, but in a stylistically very different way made for a great chat between the filmmakers. Having both the filmmaker and her mother both speaking on the film we got some really moving - and at times very funny! - insight into the film and their relationship in creating it together. It was a really special afternoon, which felt warm not just on account of the heatwave. Thank you to all that came through x Pics below for those of you who missed out, and you can join us at the next one on December 10th at MOTH Club, for a Comedy Shorts Special. Tix here.
- PRACTICES OF CARE: LOOKING AFTER & AROUND
Back in June we held our second Are You Seeing This at MOTH Club (Hackney), this time on the theme 'Practices of Care: Looking After & Around'. Despite it being the hottest day of the year so far we had an amazing turn out to watch our wonderful films and speak to our amazing filmmakers. We screened... 'On Call' - Ray Lillian Sims 'Within A Thousand Flowers' - Arthur Davies-Evitt 'MOTH' - Ynez Myers Ray's film put an important spotlight on student nurses, in particular highlighting their indomitable strength in COVID - but also drawing our attention to the sacrifices their tireless work meant for them, and the wider NHS. We then had Arthur's ethnographical piece, following the life and work of Bees and Refugees and its founder Ali Alzein. This sparked conversations on the specifics of their work, Arthur's relationship with them whilst working on the film, and larger conversations around ethical farming. And last - but by no means least - we watched Ynez's short. We were all unified by the undeniably nostalgic feel to the film; the struggle of wanting to grow up too young, and what it means when you have to understand things beyond your age... Despite whatever forces there were against it - hottest day SO FAR, Ynez being called out to work last min, Ali's bees having an emergency and us hosting Arthur and Ali's chat via very unstable wifi (you name it, it nearly went wrong) - between our ever lovely audience and the most natural, and brilliantly chatty filmmakers: we couldn't be stopped in having a great afternoon. Lots of love to all our returning pals, and all the new faces; to the filmmakers and the best team at MOTH; and to all of you we still have to meet! If you missed out, check out the pics below. AAaaaaannd... check our upcoming events page for a ticket to our next event! See you in front of the screen x
- GROWING UP: HOME TRUTHS
ARE YOU SEEING THIS - PROGRAMME ONE Yes, this post is VERY overdue. Sorry. However, we do still want to tell and show you just how damn good our first event was back in April... Sooooo, what did we feature on our first line-up on the theme of "Growing Up: Home Truths"? We had the absolute pleasure of screening a stellar all-star female line-up of the following: - HER FIGHT, dir. Phoebe Stapleton - TILDYPOPS, dir. Tiggy Bayley and Oscar Downing - SILVERING, dir. Eilidh Nicoll Catch a glimpse of them below... The day itself was fantastic: it was a Sunday and the vibes were high. Seriously, we could not have asked for a better launch event and each and every person that was there played a part in that. Big ups to the filmmakers, the audience, and the MOTH Club crew. Our fantastic mix of films had us impassioned, retrospective, and belly laughing - a pretty great combo if you ask us. The filmmaker to filmmaker interviews were an absolute stand-out, collaboratively providing the audience with real insight and honesty. It was a delight realising what a mixed crowd we had too, bringing those from the industry, those hoping to break into the industry, and those not at all involved with it altogether under one gold glittery roof. We've dropped some pics below so you can get a feel for it all yourselves - and we do so with a polite reminder to get your tickets NOW to the next event on Sunday 25th June at MOTH Club, 3pm. Tix are linked HERE! And no, that isn't Father's Day (that's the 18th)
- WHO ARE, ARE YOU SEEING THIS?
Who ARE we? In short, we are a filmmaking platform, showcase, and creative community. We bring you films from new and emerging filmmakers who have fresh takes on stories we know; or new takes altogether. Once-a-month events involve screenings, q&a's, and chances to meet, network, discuss, and grab a pint. Aaand we share creative opportunities and jobs aimed at young/new people to the film and TV industries. AND we have an annual fund for filmmakers who need a hand - no restrictions, and the promise of a screening at one of our events. Oh, and did we mention that we're non-competitive, have no filmmaker fees, and operate on a PWYC (pay what you can) basis - so we expect to see each and every one of your lovely faces there. We believe film and filmmaking should be, and can be, for everyone. Cinema is a great place for community, discussion, and inspiration - you do not need to be an expert nor rich to come down and get what you want out of our events. Sit and watch; listen and question; take notes and meet others; av a sit and a pint - whatever you want, whatever you need, we are there for it. Come see what we're about... AYST x For fresh takes and inspiring new makes. Supporting new and emerging filmmakers, always.
