Back in June we held our second Are You Seeing This at MOTH Club (Hackney), this time on the theme 'Practices of Care: Looking After & Around'. Despite it being the hottest day of the year so far we had an amazing turn out to watch our wonderful films and speak to our amazing filmmakers. We screened...
'On Call' - Ray Lillian Sims
'Within A Thousand Flowers' - Arthur Davies-Evitt
'MOTH' - Ynez Myers
Ray's film put an important spotlight on student nurses, in particular highlighting their indomitable strength in COVID - but also drawing our attention to the sacrifices their tireless work meant for them, and the wider NHS. We then had Arthur's ethnographical piece, following the life and work of Bees and Refugees and its founder Ali Alzein. This sparked conversations on the specifics of their work, Arthur's relationship with them whilst working on the film, and larger conversations around ethical farming. And last - but by no means least - we watched Ynez's short. We were all unified by the undeniably nostalgic feel to the film; the struggle of wanting to grow up too young, and what it means when you have to understand things beyond your age...
Despite whatever forces there were against it - hottest day SO FAR, Ynez being called out to work last min, Ali's bees having an emergency and us hosting Arthur and Ali's chat via very unstable wifi (you name it, it nearly went wrong) - between our ever lovely audience and the most natural, and brilliantly chatty filmmakers: we couldn't be stopped in having a great afternoon.
Lots of love to all our returning pals, and all the new faces; to the filmmakers and the best team at MOTH; and to all of you we still have to meet! If you missed out, check out the pics below. AAaaaaannd... check our upcoming events page for a ticket to our next event!
See you in front of the screen x
