SAFE/UNSAFE: RE-PRESENTING ASSAULT

CW: the films written about below focus on r@pe and PTSD

To our absolute bewilderment, we continued our streak of bringing our lovely filmmakers and audience down on one of the hottest days of the year to MOTH Club (Hackney) to watch, discuss, and mingle on Sunday 10th September.

The films presented this time were:

'You Look Fine' dir. Katie Byford

'A Sound That Follows A Silence' dir. Hannah Tasker

For the theme this September, we decided to go ahead with two films rather than our usual three - to give time and space to really explore the themes covered. Together we looked at how we can re-present traumatic, unsafe events (in this case r@pe) from a safe distance.

Katie's film started the afternoon off, tackling the systemically common experiences of loneliness and shutting out when reporting assault to a medical professional. Using flashbacks, an intricate melding of sounds and movements, and striking symbols throughout, we talked in depth about the meanings and making of the film. After some audience questions, we moved on to our second film of the day - and were lucky to be joined by the filmmakers mother who stars in the documentary film with her. Getting the chacne to deal with similar thematic points, but in a stylistically very different way made for a great chat between the filmmakers. Having both the filmmaker and her mother both speaking on the film we got some really moving - and at times very funny! - insight into the film and their relationship in creating it together.

It was a really special afternoon, which felt warm not just on account of the heatwave. Thank you to all that came through x

Pics below for those of you who missed out, and you can join us at the next one on December 10th at MOTH Club, for a Comedy Shorts Special. Tix here.
